The I-REC Standard’s official responses to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol surveys

*Since the date of this news item’s publication, the organization ‘The International REC Standard Foundation’ has changed to ‘The International Tracking Standard Foundation: Founder of I-REC (I-TRACK Foundation).’

The I-REC Standard Foundation submitted its response to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s (GHGP) recent surveys leading up to the 14 March 2023 deadline. Survey replies focused on the critical role of market-based accounting for retaining and scaling up corporate investments in renewable energy around the world.

The I-REC Standard focused its responses to the GHGP review on (i) the Scope 2 Survey, and (ii) an addendum document that recommends updates to strengthen market-based and location-based accounting and alignment with government programs. In addition to submitting its own responses, the I-REC Standard supported multiple governments, utilities, and other national actors to analyze the GHGP surveys and their relevance to domestic clean energy markets.

Providing responses and remaining engaged in the GHGP review process is critical as the resulting documents establish the methods and rules for measuring, tracking, and reporting carbon emissions linked to purchased electricity. The Scope 2 Guidance lays the foundations for all major corporate reporting frameworks including RE100, the Science Based Targets Initiative, and Race to Zero.

The I-REC Standard firmly stands by its input into the review process and is open to discussing any of its responses in detail. Please contact the I-REC Standard secretariat for any GHGP survey-related questions or comments.
