NORSUS Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research is developing a Residual Mix Calculation methodology for I-REC(E) issuing countries. NORSUS is working on a variant of the Issuance-based method (deadline for Issuance, no expiry) used by other attribute tracking systems across the globe.

The residual mix of a country represents the share of untracked electricity supply for which the energy source is not proven through reliable EACs tracking schemes. The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance advises those companies without specified purchases must use a residual mix—a type of emission factor representing the average emissions from all unclaimed energy. However, residual mix emission factors characterizing the GHG intensity of unclaimed or publicly shared electricity are not frequently available for consumer scope 2 calculations. This is why the I-REC Standard Foundation expects the report to be public and, in this way, contributes to increasing transparency and robust EAC markets globally.
