The I-TRACK Foundation is pleased to announce that China has been assessed for the potential implementation of the I-TRACK for Biogas and Biomethane Product Code (I-TRACK(G) Code), following the completion of a country assessment report. The assessment reviewed China’s biogas and biomethane market, regulatory framework, existing certification systems, and mechanisms to support the tracking of environmental attributes.
I-TRACK(G) Issuer in China
The Green Certificate Company (GCC) has been appointed as the I-TRACK(G) Issuer for China. GCC will oversee the registration and certification of biogas and biomethane production facilities, ensuring compliance with the International Attribute Tracking Standard (Standard) and the I-TRACK(G) Code, until a local Issuer is Accredited.
China
China, officially the People’s Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. It has a substantial biogas and biomethane industry spanning agricultural and rural areas, urban areas, and industrial applications. According to the country assessment, annual biogas production is approximately 27.92 billion cubic metres, with biomethane production estimated at 5.447 billion cubic metres.
The development of China’s biomethane industry is supported by national policies, including the Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Industrial Development of Biomethane, issued in 2019. China has set a target of reaching 20 billion cubic metres of annual biomethane production by 2030.
China has also established a green gas certification system managed by the China Biogas Society. By the end of March 2026, 21 biogas and biomethane projects had been registered, and 82,196 China Green Gas certificates had been issued. In addition, two methodologies for biogas-related projects under the Certified Voluntary Emission Reductions (CCER) mechanism were officially released in December 2025.
The implementation of I-TRACK(G) in China will require coordination with existing certification and CCER mechanisms to avoid double counting of environmental attributes. The I-TRACK Foundation’s ongoing engagement with the China Biogas Society provides a basis for further cooperation on the development of environmental attribute tracking for biogas and biomethane in China.
