The I-TRACK Foundation is pleased to share an important development from Brazil, where the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) has confirmed that renewable energy attribute certificates meeting the criteria established by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, including I-REC(E), may be used to demonstrate the renewable origin of electricity consumed within the RenovaBio certification process. 

The recognition follows extensive engagement between Instituto Totum, the local I-REC(E) and I-TRACK(E) Issuer in Brazil, and ANP. As part of this process, Instituto Totum provided technical information and supporting documentation on the issuance criteria, traceability, and international recognition of I-REC(E), helping to demonstrate their suitability for use within the program. 

By accepting renewable energy attribute certificates that satisfy the required criteria, ANP has expanded the options available to biofuel producers to demonstrate renewable electricity consumption while maintaining the traceability, verification, and auditability required under RenovaBio. The decision is expected to provide greater flexibility and predictability within the program’s certification process. 

This milestone reflects the growing recognition of robust attribute tracking systems in supporting national decarbonization frameworks and highlights the important role that local Issuers play in advancing credible renewable energy markets. 

The announcement also comes during a period of continued growth for the Brazilian I-REC(E) market. According to Instituto Totum, more than 65 million I-REC(E) were issued during the first half of 2026 alone, surpassing the total volume issued throughout 2025.
