I-TRACK Foundation and Global Gas Tracking Launch I-TRACK(G) Code and Registry for Biogas and Biomethane

AMSTERDAM, LONDON, SÃO PAULO — May 18, 2026 — The I-TRACK Foundation and Global Gas Tracking (GGT) announce the launch of the I-TRACK Product Code for Biogas and Biomethane (I-TRACK(G) Code), a standardized framework enabling the issuance, transfer and redemption of certificates for biogas and biomethane. The new (I-TRACK(G)) certificates will be issued and tracked in registries operated by Instituto Totum and Evident (now part of Xpansiv).

The I-TRACK(G) Code was developed in alignment with the I-TRACK Foundation’s International Attribute Tracking Standard (Standard), supporting a fact-based, ex-post and technology-agnostic approach to attribute tracking. It provides a consistent framework for market participants to document and transfer renewable gas attributes and to support credible usage claims, subject to applicable claim guidance and regulatory requirements.

The new Product Code was developed by a consortium formed by Evident Group (UK) and Instituto Totum (Brazil), following a public consultation by the I-TRACK Foundation and initial implementation in Brazil, where the approach was tested through Instituto Totum’s GAS-REC®.

Key features of I-TRACK(G) Code include:

  • Defined rules for the certificate lifecycle (issuance, transfer and redemption) for biogas and biomethane attributes.
  • Plain-language labels to indicate whether a certificate aligns with selected sustainability requirements, chain-of-custody approaches, and regulatory contexts—helping market participants more easily interpret how certificates may be used to support specific claims.
  • Interoperability with other I-TRACK Product Codes, including I-REC(E) for renewable electricity and I-TRACK(HX) for hydrogen. This supports consistent attribute management across energy carriers and can reduce duplication for participants active in multiple markets.

The I-TRACK(G) Code and Registry are available now.

Instituto Totum will continue to administer the I-TRACK(G) Code through its GAS-REC registry within Brazil. Outside of Brazil, the I-TRACK(G) Code will be operated by Evident on its newly launched I-TRACK(G) Registry.

“The release of the I-TRACK(G) Code marks an important milestone in the continued evolution of global energy attribute tracking,” said Jared Braslawsky, Executive Director, I-TRACK Foundation. “Through the I-TRACK(G) Code, we are extending the reach of the International Attribute Tracking Standard into renewable gas markets, enabling consistent, transparent, and high-integrity tracking across jurisdictions. We are pleased to have Global Gas Tracking as our Accredited I-TRACK(G) Code Manager and look forward to supporting a standardized approach to renewable gas tracking worldwide.”

“We welcome the launch of the I-TRACK(G) Code as an important step forward in building transparency and consistency in the biogas and biomethane markets,” said John Davis, Managing Director Asia Pacific, ACT Group. “As an early adopter, we see significant value in a standardized, interoperable framework that enables verifiable certificate systems and strengthens trust across the value chain. With demand for renewable gas accelerating in Asia Pacific, initiatives like this will play a key role in supporting scalable market growth and the region’s transition to a lower-carbon energy mix.”

“We are proud to see the I-TRACK(G) Code launched as a global certification standard for biogas and biomethane. This is an important step toward giving the market a more robust, credible and scalable framework for tracking renewable gas attributes across different jurisdictions,” said Fernando Giachini Lopes, CEO of Instituto Totum, a GGT partner. “It is also especially relevant that the standard has been designed to be compatible with CGOB, Brazil’s new federally regulated biomethane certificate of origin program.”

“Establishing a consistent, interoperable framework for biogas and biomethane attributes is a meaningful step toward unlocking these markets at scale,” said Travis Caddy, Director, Evident, a GGT partner. “By empowering end-users with trusted, tradeable certificates, we believe the standard can help accelerate access to finance for projects and drive real-world deployment of renewable gas solutions.”

About the I-TRACK Foundation

The International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK Foundation) is a non-profit organization that provides a robust standard for developing attribute tracking systems. The I-TRACK Foundation is acknowledged by major reporting frameworks such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), CDP, and RE100 as a reliable backbone for credible and auditable tracking instruments. It ensures the highest quality systems and adherence to best practices designed to avoid double-counting, duplicate certificate issuance, and multiple attribute claims.

The I-TRACK Foundation’s International Attribute Tracking Standard (Standard) ensures that market facilitators adhere to best practices and good governance principles for the tracking instrument and the associated markets they manage. In this way, the I-TRACK Foundation’s Standard represents a globally recognized standard that can be implemented for a myriad of products, both within and beyond the energy sector, that can benefit from harmonization, recognition, market support, and independent oversight. Recognized Issuers, stakeholders, and government bodies can consistently rely on the Standard and its associated Product Codes while implementing and running robust attribute tracking systems.

The I-TRACK Foundation is committed to ensuring unbiased access to product information and allowing end-users to confidently procure products whose origins are well-documented and clearly accounted for, thus empowering renewable energy consumption choices around the world and supporting claims of sustainability.

About GGT

Global Gas Tracking (GGT) is an international initiative focused on developing reliable systems to track renewable gases such as biogas and biomethane. Its goal is to bring more standardization and transparency to this market, ensuring that companies and governments can trust the origin and environmental attributes of these energy sources.

In this context, GGT’s main product is I-TRACK(G), developed through a partnership between Xpansiv and Instituto Totum. It is a tracking and certification system that follows the entire journey of renewable gas, from production to consumption, ensuring, through certificates, that it is indeed a clean energy source. This helps increase credibility in transactions and strengthens the environmental attributes market.

In practice, I-TRACK(G) serves as an important tool for companies looking to reduce their emissions, offering a clear and reliable way to account for these efforts. At the same time, it positions itself as a global standard, with the potential to connect different markets and support the advancement of the energy transition.

About Instituto Totum

With over 20 years of experience in developing and managing quality and self-regulation projects, Instituto Totum plays a crucial role in the development of I-TRACK(G). As a founding partner of Global Gas Tracking, Totum was responsible for the technical construction of the program’s entire documentation, which has now been officially approved by the I-TRACK Foundation.

Our expertise as I-REC issuers since 2016 was the primary driver for this initiative with the foundation, allowing us to leverage our extensive knowledge in renewable energy certification for the gas sector. Back in 2019, the Institute identified a demand in a then-nascent market that showed immense growth potential—even as many at the time were focused solely on hydrogen solutions. Based on this foresight, we conducted market studies in more mature regions, such as Europe and the United States, ‘tropicalizing’ the concepts to launch GAS-REC in 2020: the certificate of origin for biogas and biomethane.

This program served as the inspiration for the development of Brazil’s national CGOB (Biomethane Certificate of Origin) program, a regulated framework that includes mandates for natural gas producers and importers. It is a great privilege to be pioneers in an initiative that adds significant value and further develops the biogas and biomethane markets worldwide, fostering renewable sources and, consequently, enhancing global market sustainability.
