In December 2024, Nicaragua issued its first I-REC for Electricity certificates. Over 65,000 I-REC(E) were issued from EOLO, a 44 MW wind facility owned by CMI Energía.
The I-TRACK Foundation Board approved Nicaragua for I-REC(E) issuance in October 2023 with GCC (the Green Certificate company) as the Issuer. Nicaragua’s approval came after a country report was submitted to the Board detailing its renewable electricity outlook and prospects for certification, considering the focus on renewable energy policy among the national authorities. Use the button on the left of this page to download the country assessment report.
This first issuance is a great step towards further use of I-REC(E) in Nicaragua and great news for end-users in Nicaragua who are interested in purchasing I-REC(E) for the reporting of their electricity consumption. This development showcases an openness to expand the offer of this type of certificate in Central America, allowing local and multinational companies to strengthen their commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change.
