As of 1 June 2025, the monthly statistics will have a new column under the ‘Redemptions’ tab. The current statistics mention the country of redemption, among other attributes such as the vintage, technology, and volume. This column will show the country of issuance from each certificate redeemed on or after 1 June 2025, visible in the statistics published in July. The column will not be applied retroactively.
This column will increase transparency regarding cross-border Redemptions.
Good reporting practices, in line with international reporting rules, often indicate that the country of origin must match the country of redemption except for recognized single markets such as the European Union (EU).
Cross-border trade of Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) outside of the EU is a practice that is encouraged and criticized depending on the markets and stakeholders. The I-TRACK Foundation is not the gatekeeper for ‘good’ or ‘bad’ market practices regarding the trade and redemption of EACs worldwide. We intend to contribute to this discussion by publishing these statistics in a fact-based manner.
We will also provide interpretation as to why market players redeem EACs cross border in such cases where the redemption country does not have an EAC, redemption is made against the geographic location of the company’s headquarters and not their individual consumption sites, or in an attempt to increase the impact of their procurement or represent the reality of physical electricity market dynamics.
Ultimately, it will be up to end-users, reporting standards, legislative bodies, and auditors to define market boundaries for the use of EACs.
