The I-TRACK Foundation is pleased to announce Energy Peace Partners (EPP) as the Accredited I-REC(E) Issuer for Sierra Leone. The approval comes following the authorization to issue I-REC(E) by the Deputy Ministry of Energy of the Government of Sierra Leone in April 2025.
Energy Peace Partners is a nonprofit organization founded on the idea that renewable energy can serve as a building block for peace. In addition to standard I-REC(E) issuance, EPP also issues I-REC(E), with a Peace label attached, which is called a P-REC. This quality label attached to an I-REC(E) aims to increase renewable energy investment in geographies affected by conflict, climate change, and energy poverty. With this approval, EPP now serves as the exclusive Issuer of I-REC(E) and P-RECs in Sierra Leone, in addition to the countries where EPP is already the Accredited I-REC(E) Issuer — Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Chad, Somalia, Haiti, and Ethiopia.
Sierra Leone’s energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation as the country works toward universal electrification by 2040 and a greater share of renewables by 2030. With currently low national electrification rates, particularly in rural areas, Sierra Leone is actively advancing renewable energy solutions through government-led programs and international partnerships. This includes expanding clean energy capacity, scaling up mini-grids and off-grid systems, and diversifying beyond hydropower to solar and other renewable sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance climate resilience.
“We are pleased to be approved as the Accredited I-REC(E) Issuer for Sierra Leone,” said EPP Program Director Linda Wamune. “This role underscores Energy Peace Partners’ mission to support climate and finance solutions in regions where they can deliver the greatest peace and development impact. We look forward to working closely with local stakeholders and the I-TRACK Foundation to ensure robust, transparent renewable energy tracking that can help drive investment and positive social, economic and environmental outcomes for Sierra Leone.”
The I-TRACK Foundation welcomes this development and looks forward to the positive impact of I-REC(E) issuance in Sierra Leone.
